NINE QUESTIONS TRAVEL WRITERS TRY TO AVOID ANSWERING

Updated: Feb 24

Before we start, a quick disclaimer: I am a solo, female, independent, "past 50" traveller. This means I have zero patience for nonsense and a very high standard for snacks.

Also:

  • It’s not my fault if it rains. ☔

  • Don’t blame me if you get lost. 🗺️

  • I am an explorer, not a meteorologist or a miracle worker!

1. What’s the best time to visit ... ? ☀️

The "best time" is based on weather forecasts, which can seem to be an educated guess. "Likely not to rain" is the goal, but the universe loves a prank. Always pack the umbrella and keep smiling.

2. How far is too far for a day trip? 🚗

If you’re spending 40% of your day staring at the back of a headrest, it’s too far. This is doubly true if you have teenagers in the back. Ignore the "scenic route" marketing blurb, that’s just code for "prepare for whiny thoughts." Check Google Maps, click the bus icon, and face the cold, hard truth of the distance before you go.

3. What is your favourite place in Australia or NZ? 🌏

My favourite place is usually the last one I set foot in. There is always a hidden corner or a weird roadside statue in Oz or NZ waiting to be discovered. My heart is very fickle; it's entranced with the moment. Whatever is in front of me grabs my attention.

4. What is your worst travel mistake? ✈️

I once misread a departure time and watched my plane (and my sanity) fly away without me. My brain went into a full "confirmed-and-paid-for-accommodation" panic. Pro-tip: "Being a bit ditzy" is not a valid travel insurance claim. It was a very, very expensive mistake.

5. Got any packing tips? 👟

I am a "do as I say, not as I do" traveller. My suitcase is currently a graveyard for "just in case" shoes, boots, wedges, sneakers, you name it. Then I’ll see a pair of chunky knee high boots overseas and try to perform surgery to fit them into a duffel bag. It’s a work in progress, okay?

6. What if the airline loses my suitcase? 🎒

Prepare for war. My cabin bag is a survival kit: three days of clothes, toiletries, and a waterproof coat. I board the plane wearing so many layers I look like the Michelin Man, sporting my heaviest boots to save weight. Also, hit the airport pharmacy for essentials, keep the receipts for the insurance claim and enjoy your "free" luxury shampoo.

7. Luxury or budget accommodation? 🏨

I oscillate between "spoiled princess" luxury and "I hope there’s hot water" motels. I’ll suffer a basic unit if it means I can wake up and watch wild koalas having breakfast. Magic is often very inconvenient (and usually involves me being awake before 7 AM, which is the real tragedy).

8. Is there a "wrong" time to travel? ❄️

Low season means some museums are shut, and the weather is moody, but it also means no crowds and cheaper gin. There’s no wrong time to go, just a wrong time to forget to check the opening hours. Plan ahead!

9. How do I see the sights without a car? 🚌

If the destination requires three trains, a goat track, and a prayer, just join the tour bus. During peak season, look for shuttles from visitor centres. Don't be afraid to ask the locals, they usually know a shortcut (or at least a better bus).

And the best bit... 🏠✨

After all the missed flights, the overstuffed suitcases, and the hunt for the perfect hidden gem, there’s one secret I finally feel okay sharing: sometimes home is the greatest place to be. There is nothing quite like the feeling of walking through your own front door, putting on your favourite pair of shoes (the ones that didn't fit in the bag), and telling my friends and family all about the wild world out there.

Travelling makes the world relatable, yet coming home is the ultimate luxury.
