From Surf Breaks to Shire Holes: Jay’s Inland Expedition
The Hobbiton Movie Set is more than a film location; it’s a meticulously maintained 12-acre archive of Middle-earth. Transition from the salt spray of Raglan to the lush pastures of the Alexander family farm, where 44 Hobbit holes await the savvy researcher.
📍 JAY’S LOG: THE INLAND PIVOT
"I’ve swapped the 'heavy' reef breaks of Taranaki and the long lefts of Raglan for the emerald hills of Matamata. The data confirms: transitioning from a surfboard to a Shire-path is the ultimate Waikato 'Savvy Swap.' Standing in front of a round yellow door, I feel like a giant in a very well-manicured archive."

🧪 FIELD DATA: THE HOBBITON FAQ
IS IT WORTH GOING TO HOBBITON?
The Archive: Yes, especially with the 2026 updates. You aren't just looking at facades anymore. The set features 44 Hobbit dwellings, each reflecting a specific trade (baker, gardener, etc.).
The 2026 Game-Changer: Unlike previous years, all tours now include entry into the interiors of the Bagshot Row Hobbit Holes. You can finally see the intricate craftsmanship inside the hill.
CAN YOU WALK AROUND HOBBITON BY YOURSELF?
The Rule: No. The set is located on a private working farm and is accessible only via guided tour. Guides are professional and firm about keeping to the paths to protect the "Primary Source" environment.
IS THE HOBBITON TOUR EXPENSIVE?
Adult (18+): $120 NZD (until March 31, 2026).
Note: Data indicates a price increase to $130 NZD starting April 1, 2026.
Duration: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours (including the bus transfer from The Shire's Rest).
WHAT THE TOUR ARCHIVES
The Village Walk: A 1.5-hour guided walk through the 12-acre set.
Interior Access: A guided journey through the fully themed interiors of Bagshot Row.
The Green Dragon Inn: A 20-minute stop to enjoy a complimentary beverage from the Southfarthing range (Ginger Beer, Cider, or Ale).
The Working Farm: A short bus ride across the Alexander farm, providing context on how Sir Peter Jackson discovered this "Middle-earth" landscape.
🏘️ BEYOND THE SHIRE: WHAT TO DO NEARBY
1. Matamata Township
Distance: 9km (15 mins). The Data: Don't miss the i-SITE Visitor Centre on the main street; it is built like a Hobbit house.
Firth Tower Museum: A 3.7km drive from town leads to this 1882 lookout tower and historical village. It’s a "Pioneering Archive" featuring 13 historic buildings, including a jail and a schoolhouse.
Price: ~$10 Adult / $5 Child.
2. Wairere Falls
The Savvy Swap: If you need to stretch your legs after the bus ride, head to Wairere Falls. At 153 meters, it is the highest waterfall in the North Island.
The Climb: 45 minutes to the lookout; 2 hours to the top (steep and rocky).
🚗 LOGISTICS: THE "NEXT STEP" CONNECTION
From Auckland: Short on time? Join a Waitomo & Hobbiton Combo Tour. It’s a long day (9+ hours) but archives two "Must-Do" sights in one go.
From Raglan: It’s a 1-hour 15-minute drive from the surf to the Shire.
From Surf Highway 45: After finishing in Hāwera, head north through the Waitomo region to reach Matamata.
