River Country to Ancient Outback
This journey begins with water.
The Murray River, wetlands, billabongs and garden paths around Mildura slowly give way to Wentworth’s river junction, Perry Sandhills and the ancient dry lake country of Mungo National Park.
Through the lens is a visual discovery of contrast: green river edges, red sand, old timber, big skies. The landscapes are shaped by water that is sometimes present, sometimes vanished, but always part of the story.
For the full planning guide, start with the Mildura, Wentworth & Mungo National Park Slow Travel Guide, then continue to the dedicated Mungo National Park Through The Lens photo story for a deeper visual look at the ancient lake country
1. Mildura: where the river softens the dry country
Mildura’s beauty is not loud. It sits beside the river, in wetland reflections, old trees, garden paths and the surprising softness of a dry-country town built around water
.
2. Kings Billabong and Etiwanda Wetlands: quiet water, loud birdlife
The wetlands and Bilabong around Mildura remind visitors that water is not just scenery here. It is habitat, history, restoration and the reason for slowing down.
3. Wentworth: where rivers meet
Wentworth feels like a town built around a meeting point. The Murray and Darling rivers do not just pass through, they explain the place exists.
4. Perry Sandhills: the landscape shifts
Perry Sandhills feels like the moment the journey changes mood. River country is still nearby, but the outback has started clearing its throat.
5. The road to Mungo: leaving green behind
The road to Mungo is part of the experience. The landscape stretches out, the trees thin, the sky gets bigger and the journey starts to feel older.
6. Mungo National Park: deep time
Mungo is the final visual shift: dry lakebeds, ancient shorelines, wind-shaped formations and a silence that makes the whole region feel deeper.
