Mercury currently releases water at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm from October to March, and at 10am, 12pm and 2pm from April to September. Times can change, so check before you go.

Yes. Viewing the dam release is free, and there's a car park with room for campervans plus public toilets.

How far are the Aratiatia Rapids from Taupō?

The rapids are about 15 minutes' drive north of Taupō township, just off the Thermal Explorer Highway. Huka Falls is on the way, so it's easy to visit both.
